15th August 2012- Today when we celebrate our 65 year of Independence it is natural that we remember the struggle and sacrifice of our forefathers in getting us this independence. Let us take some time to pay our homage to them:

Mangal Pandey – a soldier in the British Army and the first freedom fighter and martyr. He gave spark to the First War of Independence the Sepoy Mutiny against the British in 1857.

Rani Laxmi Bai and Tantia Tope – who fought against the British till their last, breathe in 1958 to save their empire from coming under British rule.

Other great leaders who led India’s Independence Movement:

Mahatma Gandhi , Lala Lajpat Rai, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Bhagat Singh,

Bipin Chandra Pal, Sukhdev,  Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Jawahar Lal Nehru,

Chandrashekhar Azad,  Subhash Chandra Bose,  Sarojini Naidu, Dadabhai Naoroji,

Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad,  Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel and

millions of patriotic Indians who participated  in Satya Ghrahas , Disobedience and Swadeshi Movements. Without them Independence could not have come.

Since Independence there are achievements that we should justifiably be proud of.  We are proud of the writers of our constitution who gave our nation a solid foundation in one of the most well researched and thorough constitution.  We are also proud of our achievement in establishing and remaining a democracy for the past 65 years. We are proud of a growing economy which even though could have done much better (just look at China’s economic growth for comparison)  has helped many millions of Indians move out of extreme poverty into a life of modest comfort.  We are proud of success of industries like Information Technology and IT Enabled Services because of which our graduates have greater career opportunities and prospects of good salaries.

However, there are also massive failures on many fronts. All these failures are underlined by one statistics. And that is that even after 65 years, close to 40 % of our population lives below the poverty line, without having enough to eat, and access to decent education or decent healthcare.

Political crisis is the biggest crisis we face today. Black money is used to finance elections and huge amounts are spent on buying votes. It is difficult for an honest person to compete in an environment like this. As a result a new kind of leadership does not emerge. Governance is at an all-time low. Scam after scam have become everyday news. Corruption is present everywhere and is in the face.

While these are the ills with our system we also have to look inwards. When we do that we find that our moral standards as a society have fallen. We are willing to pay a tout to get our ‘work done without any hassle’ instead of questioning the authorities if we feel the rules are unfair. We don’t participate in our democratic process by casting our vote but are quick to blame others for choosing criminals as our leaders. Our line between right and wrong is fudged instead of being a clear dark straight line.  We will get both BC and OBC certificate made to get admissions of our children under these quotas even though one can have only one of these certificates. We will buy paint from a paint shop and not take a bill to avoid paying sales tax.

In recent times we have seen the movement against corruption led by Shri Anna Hazare.  It roused our own consciousness and brought us on to the streets. It helped to make our own fudged line between right and wrong, clearer. And most importantly it has made it very clear that we may shout and scream but in a democracy the real power comes from the ballot.

There is reason for hope.

In the late 19th century, the United States was as badly misgoverned as we are currently.

The United States changed. Growth and free press played important part. Political patronage became less important in the United States as growth created private sector jobs. Also a free press exposed corrupt government and business practices, empowering progressive reformers and improving the quality of government services. Thus, growth and democracy helped create a virtuous circle that improved public governance.

Today Economic decline, massive corruption and a sense of mistrust in the political system are fuelling unrest in the country and winds of change are beginning to blow. It is time for each one of us to pull up our socks and strengthen our resolve to make things happen. Be the agent of change that we want to see. Bring another kind of independence where the ‘head can again be held high’

Jai Hind.

Thank you Anna !

27th Aug 2011

Congratulations to all of us for achieving what we have achieved today with the help of Anna. From being arm chair critics of our system, silently towing the line of the corrupt by regularly giving bribes to ‘get our work done’ we rose to siege the opportunity provided by Anna. We stood up, we united and we made it more than clear to our leaders that nothing less than a strong Lok Pal would do.

Anna says only half the battle is won. Rightly so - after all, it has always been against the law to take and give bribes! Hence, in addition to having a strong Lok Pal law, we will have to be active participants in making sure that the law of Lok Pal is not broken. As a by product of this movement we are on our way to becoming a more conscientious society. We will not tolerate corruption anymore. We will have the conviction to stand up for the right. That is an important resolve Indians are making today and this is the resolve that will go hand in hand with Jan Lok Pal bill to fight the menace of corruption.

This is also a good time to think about - How did we come to be in such a situation (we are among the top most corrupt nations of the world)? What are the other reforms that are needed to get to the path of true progress and development? We surely understand the power of politics and parliament now. Shouldn’t the cleanest and the brightest be in the parliament. Then why is that not so ? When will YOU consider joining politics? How will the cleanest and the brightest become electable?

Let us all rejoice in this commendable achievement for now. We fully deserve it. And then continue to be engaged, with the same conviction, in completing the unfinished task of brining answers to some of the above questions.

Happy Independence Day !

15th Aug 2011

Wishing you a very Happy Independence Day. 64 years back we got independence from an Imperial rule and after 64 years, our nation is in the midst of another kind of fight- a fight against our own people and our own system; a system which is holding us back, a system which has resulted in more than 40% of our citizens still living below the poverty line and majority of our children still having no access to a decent education. I know we will win this fight too. So let us give our full support and be one in this fight against corruption.

We WON !

"We have finished an important milestone for Gurgaon. We have elected the representatives for Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon for the first time from 35 wards.
I am thankful for the confidence Ward 30 citizens have shown in me. I am happy for the opportunity to serve as a councillor. I am happy for an opportunity to bring about change. I am committed to bring transparency and accountability. I look forward to work together with the citizens and citizen groups to bring about best solutions to our issues. I am committed to do everything possible to make Ward 30 the cleanest and greenest in Gurgaon.
I want to thank the volunteers and supporters who believed in me and worked hard on my campaign. Over last 6 months, I have met several people who are experts in various aspects of running the city. I will continue to seek experts' help to come up with creative solutions.
Last but not least, I urge all citizens to stay engaged in the matters of our city/ward. We have a great opportunity to leave our city in a better position for our children than what was given to us. Let's work together and set an example for rest of India.
Thank you."
